Finding Beauty in Negative Spaces

(Imeem won't embed... listen to the album here)

If you'll let me lie for a second, I've been a fan of Seether since they were called Saron Gas. In actuality... I discovered the South African rock legends only a few years ago, when lead singer Shaun Morgan remade their hit "Broken" with Amy Lee (of Evanescence fame).

Broken was amazing and got me hooked on the romance-grunge sound of Seether (it's very easy to compare the guys with Nirvana, especially on their latest effort). Unfortunately for my addiction, another addiction got in the way- Shaun checked himself into rehab for a *long* time, postponing a new album until late last year, when the guys released their third effort, entitled "Finding Beauty in Negative Spaces."

Even at first listening, the album will blow you away. Seether's notorious DEEP distortion effects are pulled off just perfectly enough to make them top-40 material on some tracks (the dreary "Walk Away From The Sun" and the hopeful "Rise Above This") while remaining true to their grunge/rock roots on infectious tracks like "(You're) No Jesus Christ" and "FMLYHM".

The only shortfall is that, although about half the album is *really* catchy, the other half is very hard to get into. Sort of like the Killers, in that sense. But altogether the album makes an interesting and comfortable transition into the field for newcomers to hard rock and grunge.

Tracks and my rating:

  1. "Like Suicide" - 4:14 (***)
  2. "Fake It" - 3:15 (*****)
  3. "Breakdown" - 3:29 (***)
  4. "F.M.L.Y.H.M." - 3:28 (****)
  5. "Fallen" - 4:18 (***)
  6. "Rise Above This" - 3:23 (***)
  7. "No Jesus Christ" - 7:05 (**)
  8. "6 Gun Quota" - 3:23 (***)
  9. "Walk Away from the Sun" - 4:13 (***) (wait for the third chorus... amazing)
  10. "Eyes of the Devil" - 5:00 (*) (didn't like this one so much)
  11. "Don't Believe" - 4:35 (*)
  12. "Waste" - 4:22 (**)

Pretty. Odd.

Today Paul and I got the new Panic at the Disco CD Pretty. Odd.
We have different opinions and I'm sure you'll be able to hear them both.
In my opinion their sophmore album wasn't as good as their first..
But there is nothing I dislike about A Fever You Can't Sweat Out. I love everything.
The beats are what really gets me.. and I think that's what their second album is lacking.
That's just me though.
Don't get me wrong..
Pretty. Odd. is still amazing and I love almost every song..
Nine in the Afternoon is my favorite..
Check it out if you haven't already!
I highly recommend it!
